How to play Baccarat

Predict whether Player or Banker finishes nearer nine, or whether they tie. Those names identify hands, not a requirement to bet on yourself.

What you need

Standard-deck cards and a dealer for practice, plus optional non-cash counters; casinos commonly use multiple decks

Set up the game

  1. Declare a practice paytable: Player 1:1, Banker 1:1 minus 5% commission, Tie 8:1. Place predictions before dealing two alternating cards to each hand.

Playing Baccarat

  1. Aces count one, 2–9 face value, tens/faces zero. Keep the units digit of each total.
  2. Either initial eight or nine is a natural: both stand. Otherwise Player draws on 0–5, stands on 6–7.
  3. If Player stands, Banker draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7. If Player draws, use the separate Banker table below.
  4. Higher final total wins. A tie returns ordinary Player/Banker stakes and pays a Tie prediction. Bettors never choose hits in this version.

The third card is not the final total

Player starts two-three and draws eight, finishing on three. Banker starts king-three, totaling three, and stands because Player’s third card was eight. The deal ties. Using Player’s final total instead of its third card in the drawing table would produce an incorrect extra draw.

Banker after Player draws

At totals 0–2 Banker draws; at 3 draws unless Player’s third card is 8; at 4 draws on 2–7; at 5 on 4–7; at 6 on 6–7; at 7 stands. Naturals end the deal before this table.

A session is separate from a deal

Use a fixed practice-hand count. Recording previous results helps audit arithmetic and payouts but guarantees nothing about the next deal. No required session point target exists in the basic dealing procedure.

Beginner decisions

  • Distinguish Player’s total from its third-card value. Banker’s table uses the latter.
  • Announce totals during visible practice deals so everyone can inspect the units-digit arithmetic.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Counting a queen toward a blackjack-style 21.
  • Taking another card because a bettor prefers to draw.

Questions about this game

Does betting Banker make me the dealer?

No. It predicts one hand’s result.

Are Banker wins always even money?

Commission reduces the win. No-commission games change other payouts; inspect their specific table.
