What you need

Carcassonne base-game tiles, meeples and scoring track

Set up the game

  1. Place the start tile and give each player their base-game meeples, retaining a scoring meeple on the track.
  2. This follows the current Z-Man base game without River, Abbot or other expansions; older editions may score farms differently.

Playing Carcassonne

  1. Draw one tile and place it touching an existing tile, matching every adjoining road, city edge and field.
  2. You may place one of your available meeples on a feature of the just-placed tile, provided that connected feature contains no other meeple yet.
  3. Score a completed road, city or monastery when the tile closes it, then return the meeple from that feature for later turns. Fields normally remain occupied until final scoring.
  4. After the last tile, score unfinished features and fields under the edition’s rules. Highest total score wins.

Closing a short road

You place a tile that caps a road with your meeple already on it. Score the road’s tiles immediately and take that meeple back. On a future turn, you may put the returned piece on a newly placed tile.

The occupancy rule follows the whole feature

A tile edge may be empty beside the tile you place, but its road or city can connect around the board to a distant meeple. Trace the entire connected feature before adding your own. Separately claimed features can later merge, which is a different situation.

Beginner decisions

  • Keep some meeples free; placing all of them on unfinished features removes future placement choices.
  • Look at whether a tile completes a feature before committing a meeple.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Placing a new meeple onto a feature already occupied through a connection elsewhere on the board.
  • Returning a farmer early as if the field were a completed road.

Questions about this game

May opposing meeples ever share a feature?

They can end up together when previously separate features are connected; you cannot directly place on an already occupied connected feature.

Do roads and cities both score only at the end?

No. Completed features score during play and return their meeples.
