How to play Dead by Daylight
Survivors repair generators and escape while a Killer hunts and sacrifices them. Individual escapes and deaths can coexist in one trial.
What you need
Installed game, online access and supported controls
Set up the game
- Complete both role tutorials and practice interactions and skill checks.
- Read the selected character’s perks, items and power; Killer powers differ substantially.
If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)
Playing Dead by Daylight
- Survivors repair generators and respond to skill checks; mistakes can reveal activity and lose progress.
- Use windows, pallets and cover to buy chase time. Coordinate healing and rescues without abandoning every generator.
- Repair five generators, open an exit gate and leave to escape.
- The Killer tracks, injures and downs Survivors, then carries them to hooks. Rescues compete with ongoing hook progression.
- Deaths and escapes remove Survivors. The hatch is a special last-Survivor route. All escaped or dead ends the trial; Bloodpoints reward activities rather than merely counting escapes.
Use the time a chase buys
One Survivor draws the Killer away from a working generator. Two teammates can continue repairing while another assesses a needed rescue or heal. If all three hide and watch, the chase creates time nobody uses. Reassess when the chase changes direction, since useful assignments can change quickly.
A rescue needs a follow-up
A rescue is useful when the rescued player has a plausible survival route and teammates can continue objectives. Running injured directly to a guarded hook can create a second emergency. Check the Killer’s location, hook state and available teammates. No fixed rescue second is universally correct: powers, perks, distance and an ongoing chase all change the decision. As a beginner, learn the basic repair, chase and rescue loop before relying on a complicated perk combination.
Beginner decisions
- Check whether another teammate handles a rescue before leaving your generator.
- As Killer, abandon an unproductive chase when objective pressure elsewhere is more useful.
Common rule mix-ups
- Assuming Survivor portraits change basic movement speed.
- Ignoring power/perk exceptions to ordinary injury and downing.
Questions about this game
Can some escape while others die?
Yes. Outcomes are not always one shared Survivor result.
Can everyone simply use the hatch?
No. Ordinary hatch availability is a final-Survivor exception.
Sources and edition notes
Standard 1 Killer versus 4 Survivors. Powers, perks, events and 2v8 can create exceptions to this baseline.
