How to play Egyptian Rat Screw
Turn cards in order, survive face-card challenges and interrupt with a valid slap. Win by collecting the deck rather than adding card values.
What you need
A 52-card deck without jokers and equal access to a central pile
Set up the game
- Deal all cards face down around the table; keep stacks unseen. Agree doubles and sandwiches only, with a one-card false-slap penalty.
Playing Egyptian Rat Screw
- Start left of the dealer. Expose one top card clockwise. A numbered card normally passes play to the next player.
- A jack gives the next player one chance to expose a face card or ace; queen gives two, king three and ace four. A face/ace transfers a fresh challenge to the next player.
- If all permitted attempts are ordinary numbers, the last challenger takes the central pile and starts again. Put winnings under your stack.
- Anyone can interrupt with a slap on two adjacent equal ranks, or equal ranks separated by exactly one card. First valid slap takes the pile, even during a challenge.
- A false slap costs one card beneath the central pile. Empty-handed players may slap back in; collecting every card wins.
A challenge is interrupted
Alex exposes a king. Bea’s attempts begin seven, four, seven. The third card completes a sandwich. Anyone may slap before the king’s pile is collected, including Bea; that claim overrides Alex’s challenge win. With seven, four, six instead, Alex would collect after the third ordinary card.
Keep speed fair
Turn cards away from your own view and tap with a flat hand. Put the center in reach of everyone. These habits prevent a player seeing a rank early and make overlapping slaps easier to judge.
Beginner decisions
- Track the recent two ranks while remembering whether a challenge is active. Those tasks are enough for a beginner round.
- Choose the slap list before dealing: adding a pattern after it appears makes the outcome depend on an argument.
Common rule mix-ups
- Treating a king as an immediate pile win before challenge attempts.
- Carrying unused attempts through a newly exposed face card.
