What you need

A music player, an operator and a clear, nonslip movement area

Set up the game

  1. Remove obstacles and give each dancer room to extend their arms without touching anyone. Test that everyone can hear the music and stop cue.
  2. Explain the restart choice before play: this guide uses a brief reset and immediate rejoining rather than an exercise penalty.

Playing Freeze Dance

  1. The operator starts the music; everyone dances within their own space.
  2. Pause the music at varied intervals. Dancers freeze and hold the pose until music restarts.
  3. If someone keeps moving, remind them to reset and rejoin. Continue for a short agreed session, then stop the music and finish together. There is no required score or last-player winner.

The freeze belongs to the pause

The music stops while you are waving both arms. Hold a comfortable position, then wait. Another dancer adjusts their balance; in this format they reset and remain in the game. Nobody earns a point for catching them.

A visible cue can improve access

An operator can raise a hand when pausing the music so a dancer who has difficulty hearing the change can participate. Announce that visual cue in advance and use it consistently rather than judging people against a cue they cannot perceive.

Beginner decisions

  • Use balanced poses that are comfortable to hold. A dramatic one-legged pose is harder to stop in than a two-foot stance.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Treating this no-elimination format as Musical Chairs.
  • Using a long silence to pressure an uncomfortable dancer to move.

Questions about this game

Does Playworks use the same restart?

Its published format suggests a short activity before rejoining; immediate rejoining here is an explicit adaptation.

Can seated players join?

Yes. Choose movements and freeze positions that work for everyone.

Sources and edition notes

Adapted from Playworks Dance Freeze: shared music/stop mechanic, with immediate rejoining replacing its exercise reset. Not an elimination ruleset.

Sources and stated format checked October 14, 2026. This records a document check, not a claim of hands-on testing.
