What you need

Pokémon Scarlet or Violet on Nintendo Switch

Set up the game

  1. Choose either version, create a character and follow the opening academy introduction.
  2. This describes the base Scarlet/Violet Paldea adventure; The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero expansion adds separate areas and progression. Version exclusives and online features differ.

If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)

Playing Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

  1. Travel through Paldea, encounter wild Pokémon and build a party of up to six. Use Poké Balls to catch Pokémon when the game permits.
  2. In turn-based battles, choose moves with type interactions in mind. Switch party members, use items where allowed, or retreat from an unfavorable wild encounter.
  3. Pursue Victory Road Gyms, Path of Legends Titans and Starfall Street bases in an order your team can handle. Opponents do not all automatically scale to your level.
  4. Complete the story objectives to reach the later Area Zero resolution. Catching every Pokémon is an optional collection goal, not the only story ending.

An early detour

Your party reaches a Gym whose Pokémon survive your strongest attacks. You can leave, catch a Pokémon with a more suitable type, and complete an easier Titan or Gym before returning. The open map permits that detour.

Open routes are not equal difficulty

The map offers freedom to visit Gyms, Titans and Team Star bases, but their encounters have distinct levels. If a leader overwhelms your party, explore and train elsewhere. This is more useful than assuming the nearest marker is always the next required encounter.

Beginner decisions

  • Check the map and a nearby opponent’s level; leave a difficult area and return after training.
  • Carry a few different Pokémon types instead of relying on one high-level favorite.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Assuming every path scales perfectly to your current team.
  • Confusing a Tera Type with a Pokémon’s usual type; Terastallizing changes defensive and offensive interactions under its own rules.

Questions about this game

Can I follow all three paths?
