How to play Spoons
Build four cards of one rank while watching for the first spoon to disappear. After that first grab, every player races for a spoon, whatever their cards show.
What you need
A 52-card deck, one fewer spoon than players, and paper for letters
Set up the game
- Put spoons in the center with handles accessible. Deal four cards each; the dealer keeps the remaining deck as the supply.
Playing Spoons
- The dealer draws one, keeps four and passes one face down left. Each receiving player similarly chooses a card to pass left. The last player discards into a separate trash pile.
- Continue passing briskly without taking ordinary clockwise turns. Pause to reshuffle the trash when the dealer exhausts the supply.
- A player with four of a kind takes a spoon. Once anyone takes one, everyone may take one.
- The player without a spoon receives the next letter of S-P-O-O-N. Redeal for another round. Spelling the whole word eliminates that player; remove a spoon to keep one fewer than remaining players. Last player wins.
Your cards need not match after the first grab
You have three queens and a five when another player quietly takes a spoon. React to that spoon rather than wait for a fourth queen. In a five-player round there are four spoons: even a player holding four unmatched cards can claim one after the legitimate first grab.
Keep the exchange readable
Pass cards in one direction and put the outgoing card in a clear receiving space, separate from a neighbor’s held cards. This is practical table organization, not an extra scoring rule. Avoid a scramble for the same handle: one spoon per person is sufficient.
Beginner decisions
- Keep a pair while scanning the center between passes. Looking only at the cards can lose a round even when your hand is improving.
- Discard a single unwanted rank promptly; passing decisions that take too long create queues and conceal the first spoon grab.
Common rule mix-ups
- Grabbing before anyone has four of a kind.
- Assuming everyone needs four of a kind before touching a spoon.
Questions about this game
Can we play a single round?
Yes, as a declared shorter session; the published elimination game normally lasts several rounds.
Are straights enough?
