What you need

A flying disc, cones for a rectangular field and two end zones, and distinguishable teams

Set up the game

  1. Standard outdoor play uses seven per side, with a 70×40-yard central field and two 20-yard end zones. A smaller field/player count is a pickup adaptation.
  2. For this short pickup game agree first to seven goals, win by two, no time cap. Regulation events use their announced game totals and caps. Choose first receiving side and defended ends.

Playing Ultimate Frisbee

  1. Begin with teams on opposite goal lines. Defense throws the pull to offense. The receiving side takes possession and attacks the far end.
  2. After catching, stop as quickly as possible and establish a pivot. Pass before the nearby marker’s legal stall count reaches ten. Teammates without the disc may run.
  3. A drop, interception, out-of-bounds pass or stall changes possession immediately; the other team attacks in the opposite direction. Do not wait for a new pull after ordinary turnovers.
  4. A controlled in-bounds catch in the attacking end zone scores one. Teams change ends; the scoring side pulls to begin the next point. Substitute after goals or permitted injury stoppages.
  5. Avoid contact, screens and picks. Players make and resolve calls. Stop on a call, explain what happened, and use the rules’ contested-call restart if disagreement remains. Reach the declared target and margin to win.

A backward pass can open a forward lane

A marker blocks Jo’s forward throw and the stall count is rising. Sam offers a safe pass behind Jo. Completing that pass gives Sam possession and a new legal count, while Jo can cut into a different space. If the pass drops instead, opponents take over there; the original offense does not retrieve it for a do-over.

Separate pickup choices from the sport’s rules

First to seven is a declared short-game choice, not the universal championship endpoint. Before a session, define sidelines, end-zone lines, boundaries and any agreed stall-count adaptation. Do not quietly shorten the count for one thrower. After a disputed call, reconstruct the last uncontested position rather than awarding yourself possession because your team shouted first.

Beginner decisions

  • Offer a short reset pass beside or behind the thrower. The disc can travel backward, and retaining possession is often better than forcing a long throw.
  • Cut into a space, then clear it if no pass comes. Remaining in the lane can prevent the next teammate from finding an open route.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Continuing to run with the disc after a catch.
  • Restarting with a pull after every incomplete pass.

Questions about this game

Does touching the disc force me to catch it?

A failed offensive catch attempt can cause a turnover when the disc hits ground. A defensive deflection is not automatically possession.

Is contact allowed if the disc is reachable?

No. Players must avoid contact and dangerous play; proximity to the disc does not justify a collision.
