How to play Age of Empires IV
Build an economy and army, then complete an enabled victory before the opponent. Orders happen in real time, not alternating turns.
What you need
Installed game and supported controls; Mission Zero and Art of War provide practice
Set up the game
- Complete Mission Zero, then choose English against an easy computer opponent on a small map. Inspect victories.
- Find Town Center, villagers, scout and nearby resources; set a useful resource rally point.
If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)
Playing Age of Empires IV
- Train villagers, gather food/wood/gold/stone, build drop-offs and houses before population caps stop production.
- Scout resources, sheep, enemy production and routes without wasting the scout in combat.
- Spend on units, buildings, upgrades and age advancement. English advance by constructing their chosen eligible Landmark.
- Respond to observed armies: spears answer cavalry, archers answer unarmored spears, horsemen threaten archers; armor, upgrades and numbers matter.
- Win by destroying enemy Landmarks, controlling all Sacred Sites for their countdown, or defending a completed Wonder through its countdown. Read the actual enabled conditions and timer.
Let scouting change the purchase
A scout sees enemy horsemen approaching. More archers because English have strong archers does not solve the immediate cavalry threat. Add suitable spearmen, protect exposed villagers and position together. Scout again afterward: enemy archers can answer those spearmen, so the useful composition can change.
Repeat an economy inspection
Check Town Center production, idle workers, population room and the resource needed for your next purchase. Repeat between army commands. If food is abundant but wood blocks a necessary building, reassign workers instead of waiting for the imbalance to resolve itself. There is no universally correct permanent worker split: purchases, losses and map access change demand. Advancing an age is useful only when you can also make use of what it unlocks and survive the opponent’s timing.
Beginner decisions
- Check villager production while commanding armies.
- Before another military building, ask whether you can keep existing production busy.
Common rule mix-ups
- Stockpiling while the economy and army stay small.
- Assuming a nominal counter wins regardless of numbers and upgrades.
