What you need

Installed Civilization VI and the in-game Civilopedia

Set up the game

  1. Create a manageable Standard Rules map at beginner difficulty; inspect speed, turn limit and enabled victories.
  2. Choose a leader, inspect abilities, settle the first city and explore nearby terrain.

If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)

Playing Sid Meier's Civilization VI

  1. Each turn, order units, choose research and civics, and manage city production before ending your turn.
  2. Grow with food, build with production, expand with settlers and improve eligible tiles using builders’ limited charges.
  3. Science unlocks technology; culture unlocks civics. Select policies supporting your plan.
  4. Explore, negotiate and trade; approach war with a defense and victory plan.
  5. Monitor World Rankings: Standard victories are Science, Culture, Domination, Religion and Score. An enabled victory ends normal competition; Score decides at the configured limit if no earlier condition succeeds.

Give production a purpose

Pursuing Science, you can build another unit or improve research infrastructure. An approaching rival army makes defense urgent; a safe border and lagging research suggest the other choice. Compare victory progress with immediate threats. Producing everything simply because it is available can postpone the project your plan actually needs.

The selected ruleset determines the finish

Standard Science ends with the Mars-colony projects after satellite and Moon steps. Religion requires your founded religion predominant in every civilization: more than half its cities follow it. Domination concerns original capitals; Culture compares visiting and domestic tourists. Gathering Storm adds Diplomacy and changes the Science finish. Check the actual victory panel rather than following a video for another expansion. These distinctions matter before committing many turns to a project that is only an intermediate step in your ruleset.

Beginner decisions

  • Place districts for a likely victory and useful adjacencies rather than constructing everything indiscriminately.
  • Scout routes before sending vulnerable settlers alone.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Treating a midgame score lead as a guaranteed win.
  • Using Gathering Storm’s science ending in Standard Rules.
