How to play Apex Legends
Choose a Legend, drop with your squad, gather equipment and survive the closing Ring to be the last squad standing.
What you need
Apex Legends on a supported platform, EA account and online connection
Set up the game
- Complete the current orientation or practice options, then choose a Battle Royale queue and a Legend. Read that Legend's tactical, passive and ultimate abilities.
- This covers ordinary Battle Royale. Freestyle and rotating modes have other respawn and victory rules.
If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)
Playing Apex Legends
- The Jumpmaster chooses a drop path; split slightly to loot without abandoning teammates. Equip weapons, ammunition, armor and healing supplies.
- Move toward the next safe Ring area as it closes. Use pings to mark enemies, supplies or a route without requiring a voice call.
- If a teammate is knocked, they may be revived while still down. A fully eliminated teammate may be recoverable and respawnable under the current Battle Royale rules and available map features.
- Fight or reposition through the final zones. The last surviving squad wins; individual damage or kill counts do not substitute for squad survival.
Two squads and a moving Ring
Your squad has the high ground but the next safe area moves downhill. Leaving late would force everyone through open ground while taking Ring damage. Ping a covered path early and move together; winning the previous fight is not the same as winning the match.
Knock, elimination and recovery
A knock leaves a player down but potentially revivable by a teammate. Elimination is more serious; recovery or respawn depends on the current match mode and whether a teammate can reach a usable opportunity. A beginner should first learn to distinguish the status icon before running into danger for an impossible revive.
Beginner decisions
- Ping a useful attachment or extra armor if a teammate lacks it; team equipment is more valuable than duplicate loot you cannot use.
- Start moving before the Ring catches you rather than waiting until the boundary is at your back.
Common rule mix-ups
- Treating a downed teammate and a fully eliminated teammate as the same rescue situation.
- Looting after the safe zone moves without checking the route out.
Questions about this game
Do Legends all have the same abilities?
No. Their ability kits and classes differ, so learn one Legend's escape, support or information role first.
Can one squad member win alone?
Yes if that survivor outlasts every other squad, but the result is credited to the squad.
