What you need

Paper, pencil, two players and optionally an agreed dictionary

Set up the game

  1. Agree on a category, allowed vocabulary and error limit. Use correctly spelled ordinary words without names or abbreviations for this version.
  2. The setter privately writes the answer, then one blank per letter. Track wrong guesses separately.

Playing Hangman

  1. Name an untried letter.
  2. The setter reveals every occurrence if present, with no error.
  3. If absent, record the letter and one error. Six circles or petals can replace the traditional drawing.
  4. A repeated guess adds no new information and costs no extra error in this convention.
  5. The guesser wins by revealing or naming the full word before error six. Otherwise the setter wins. Swap roles; agree separately on any match scoring.

Reveal all repeated letters

The word is BANANA. A reveals _ A _ A _ A without an error. E costs one. N reveals _ A N A N A, after which the player may say BANANA to win. Revealing only the first A would withhold information the correct letter guess earned.

Make a fair challenge

Choose words the guesser plausibly knows. A category such as animals narrows the problem without giving away the answer. Younger players can use a category list or a larger error allowance, announced before the first guess. Short words can be harder than long ones because they expose fewer clues, so length alone is a poor difficulty setting. A group should also decide whether inflected words or phrases are acceptable before selecting the answer.

Beginner decisions

  • Use the category and revealed positions rather than guessing common letters mechanically.
  • Write the answer privately first to avoid accidental changes and missed repeats.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Revealing just one occurrence of a guessed letter.
  • Changing the answer or vocabulary agreement mid-round.

Questions about this game

Can we avoid the traditional drawing?

Yes. Six boxes or petals track the same error allowance.

What about a setter’s spelling mistake?

Discard that round and restart; this is a suggested friendly resolution.

Sources and edition notes

Paper-and-pencil Hangman with six errors, no repeated-letter penalty, and a wrong whole-word guess costing one error. These are agreed friendly conventions, not universal rules.
