What you need

Installed game on a supported platform and supported controls

Set up the game

  1. Begin Normal with tutorials enabled; inspect exosuit condition before wandering.
  2. Learn scanner, multi-tool, inventory, quick menu and log controls; select the intended tutorial mission.

If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)

Playing No Man's Sky

  1. Watch life support and hazard protection. Find shelter and recharge with materials accepted by the relevant technology.
  2. Scan and mine needed resources while managing fuel and cargo space.
  3. Follow starting-ship repair prompts and craft requested components; ingredients are not interchangeable.
  4. After flight unlocks, explore, trade and follow tutorial travel/construction steps. Costs depend on technology and settings.
  5. Use Catalogue & Guide and the log to choose further objectives. Missions finish, exploration continues; death penalties depend on settings and Permadeath is a distinct commitment.

Repair requirements stay separate

Two ship technologies show different missing components. A large stack for the first does not fix the second. Pin the missing component, follow its ingredient chain and return when that repair’s menu confirms it can be completed. Solving one displayed requirement at a time is clearer than gathering unrelated valuable cargo while the ship remains unusable.

Prepare for the next journey

Check what equipment the next trip uses, what it consumes and whether there is cargo space for the materials you intend to collect. Reselect a confusing mission and read its current instruction rather than collecting random valuables. The in-game information is tailored to the save and installed technology; an older walkthrough may show a changed recipe or menu. A short preparation stop is often less disruptive than discovering the missing ingredient far from shelter.

Beginner decisions

  • Reserve essentials for your current suit and ship systems before selling surplus.
  • Pin one recipe or mission when learning instead of chasing every nearby marker.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Trusting an old crafting recipe over the current in-game requirement.
  • Expecting Creative and Normal to enforce identical costs and death penalties.
