What you need

Stardew Valley on a supported platform

Set up the game

  1. Create a farmer and choose a farm map. The Standard map offers broad crop space; maps such as Beach or Meadowlands change the starting opportunities.
  2. Check the current platform version; this guide follows the official Wiki's basic farm opening rather than a fixed speedrun route.

If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)

Playing Stardew Valley

  1. On most farm maps, find Lewis's starter parsnip seeds inside your home. Clear a few plots, hoe soil, plant seeds and water them; on Meadowlands the starting gifts differ.
  2. Each day choose how to spend energy among farming, foraging, fishing, social visits and later mining. A crop without water pauses its growth rather than dying solely from one dry day.
  3. Sell useful surplus, save materials for crafting and watch the season calendar: seasonal crops normally wither when their growing season ends.
  4. The Community Center and other projects offer progression, but there is no single required ending or competitive score. Choose a farm goal and work toward it over multiple days.

Spring day one on a Standard Farm

You clear a 3×5 patch near your farmhouse, hoe it, plant Lewis's fifteen parsnip seeds and water them. There is still daylight to forage. If you skip watering on day two, that harvest is delayed rather than instantly destroyed.

The first crop and the calendar

The wiki describes fifteen starter parsnip seeds on most maps, four days of growth with daily watering, and a different Meadowlands start. A beginner can clear a modest patch and plant first, rather than spend the whole day removing every weed. Later, compare a crop's growth days with the days remaining in its season.

Beginner decisions

  • Avoid planting a crop so late in a season that its stated growth time extends beyond the final day.
  • Carry food for energy when exploring the mines, and leave time to return home before becoming exhausted.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Expecting all farm maps to start with identical seeds and terrain; Meadowlands begins differently.
  • Using all energy clearing land before planting and watering the starter crop.

Questions about this game

Do I have to complete the Community Center?

No. Stardew Valley is open-ended; it is a major optional progression path, not a game-over requirement.

Will a forgotten watering day kill a crop?

Ordinary unwatered crops stop growing that day; the end of a crop's season is a separate issue.
