What you need

Rocket League on a supported platform, controller or keyboard, and a local or online match

Set up the game

  1. Complete the in-game introductory tutorial and try Free Play to learn steering, jumping and boost without match pressure.
  2. Select a standard Soccar playlist; team size varies by playlist. These instructions cover ordinary goal scoring, not Hoops, Rumble or Dropshot.

If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)

Kickoffs, goals, and rotation

  1. At kickoff, drive toward the center ball or rotate back if a teammate is already challenging it. Pick up boost from pads around the arena.
  2. Strike the ball toward the opposing goal, position under it for an aerial attempt, or pass into a teammate's path. Opponents can intercept and counterattack.
  3. After a goal, cars reset for another kickoff. The team with more goals at the end of regulation wins; a tied ordinary playlist match continues into sudden-death overtime. Tournament overtime may have a time limit and tiebreak procedure.
  4. If a teammate is attacking, cover a likely counterattack instead of joining every touch at the ball.

Two players racing at the same ball

Your teammate is already driving toward a loose ball near midfield and you are farther back. Stay between the ball and your own goal, collect nearby small boost pads, and be ready for a rebound. If the teammate misses, you can now challenge with your goal covered behind you.

What a good first touch does

A useful touch sends the ball toward a teammate, an open corner or an opponent's goal while leaving your team able to defend. Hitting the ball hard directly into an opponent often returns it immediately. Watch the opponent's position before committing to a challenge.

Beginner decisions

  • In Free Play, practice approaching the ball from its side, then drive through it toward a specific part of the goal.
  • Use small boost pads while rotating back; leaving the goal undefended to chase a large pad can concede an easy shot.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Assuming the personal point display decides the winner; goals by the team decide the standard match.
  • Ignoring ball camera and teammates' positions, causing two defenders to challenge the same ball.

Questions about this game

Can I play without online matchmaking?

Yes. Use Free Play or local and private match options available on your platform.

Do all playlists use the same goal rules?

No. Extra Modes and temporary playlists can change the arena, object and win condition. Check that playlist's rules.
