How to play Sardines
One player hides; each finder quietly joins the hiding group until everyone has found it.
What you need
A supervised hiding area with clear boundaries and a stop signal
Set up the game
- Choose one hider. Agree on a count long enough for them to hide and name places everyone can safely enter.
- Pick an open hiding space large enough for the group. Lockable containers, appliances and cramped spaces that trap people are out of bounds.
Playing Sardines
- The hider leaves while everyone else counts at base. Searchers then look within the agreed area.
- On finding the group, join quietly instead of announcing its location. Do not obstruct exits or squeeze into an unsafe space.
- The round finishes when everyone has found the hiding group. In the Playworks format, the first finder hides next.
Quietly finding the second hider
You spot two players behind a permitted screen. Both are part of the hidden group: join them quietly, leaving the walking route open. Do not chase the remaining searchers or shout that you found someone.
Make the search end reliably
Set a short maximum search time and an audible recall signal before people spread out. If a participant cannot hear it from a hiding location, that location is unsuitable. Count everyone at the meeting point before beginning another round.
Beginner decisions
- Notice which searched areas become unusually quiet; avoid following a crowd so closely that nobody searches elsewhere.
Common rule mix-ups
- Calling out the location as in ordinary Hide-and-Seek.
- Making the last finder the next hider without agreeing to change the referenced format.
Questions about this game
Is the last searcher eliminated?
No. Everyone can participate in the next round.
Must people physically squeeze together?
No. Use a nearby safe gathering spot if the original hiding place becomes crowded; that is a practical adaptation.
