What you need

Terraria on a supported device

Set up the game

  1. Create a character and world, choosing difficulty deliberately. Classic world and character settings make a straightforward first learning run; Journey Mode changes tools and control over difficulty.
  2. This guide covers a first survival start, not every biome, boss or platform-specific control.

If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)

Playing Terraria

  1. Cut trees for wood and build a work bench. Craft simple equipment and shelter with walls, background walls, an entrance and lighting so the space can serve as housing.
  2. Talk to the Guide NPC about crafting recipes and materials. Explore nearby surface areas, then venture underground for ore, accessories and health upgrades while watching for hazards.
  3. As equipment improves, prepare an arena, healing supplies and movement options for boss fights. Defeating bosses unlocks later progress; there is no standard match timer or point score.
  4. Keep a safe route home before night and use a respawn point where available. Death penalties depend on character difficulty.

Night falls before you find ore

Instead of entering an unlit cave with no exit gear, build a wood room near the spawn point, place a work bench and torch, then ask the Guide what available materials can craft. Exploring underground can wait until you have light and a way back out.

A house is more than a box

For an NPC to move in, suitable housing requires an enclosed space with a background wall, light, a flat surface item and comfort item in addition to an entrance. A temporary dirt shelter may protect you for a night without satisfying all of those housing checks.

Beginner decisions

  • A work bench and a few torches make the first evening more useful than wandering in darkness.
  • Keep spare platforms or rope to escape a deep shaft instead of digging down without a return route.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Treating a foreground box alone as a valid NPC house while leaving background walls or light missing.
  • Equating Journey Mode's extra starting tools and adjustable settings with the Classic start.

Questions about this game

Can I finish Terraria in one session?

The game has progression and later bosses, but this guide only covers the first steps, not a fixed-length match.

Can I change character difficulty later?

Not all character settings are freely interchangeable. Choose carefully when creating the character.
