How to play The Sims 4
Create Sims, build homes and direct their everyday choices in an open-ended life simulation.
What you need
The Sims 4 on a supported platform
Set up the game
- Create a household or choose a premade one, select a residential lot and enter Live Mode.
- This guide covers the base game; expansion packs add careers, worlds and systems. There is no shared competitive objective.
If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)
Playing The Sims 4
- Select a Sim and queue interactions with people, objects or the environment. Watch needs such as hunger, energy, hygiene and social connection.
- Use Build Mode to buy, move or place household objects within your available funds. Return to Live Mode to see whether Sims can reach and use them.
- Choose whether to pursue an aspiration, career, relationship or building project. Pause or adjust game speed to handle overlapping needs.
- Continue the household story as long as you want. The Sims 4 has no universal final score or required victory condition.
A small first household
A new Sim comes home tired and hungry. Pause, queue a meal at a reachable refrigerator, then send the Sim to a bed. Tomorrow you might work on a career goal; tonight, meeting basic needs prevents the plan from collapsing.
Build Mode changes what Sims can actually do
Buying a kitchen object does not help if furniture blocks its route. After changing a room, return to Live Mode and try the interaction; the Sim’s response shows whether the layout is usable. This is a simulation of choices, not a race to a score.
Beginner decisions
- Pause before queuing several actions when a household member has an urgent need.
- Check routing if an object looks placed correctly but a Sim cannot use it.
Common rule mix-ups
- Leaving a Sim with no accessible bed, toilet or food source while focusing on décor.
- Treating one aspiration as mandatory for every household.
