How to play Dota 2
In a five-hero team, push through enemy defenses and destroy the opposing Ancient.
What you need
Dota 2 on PC, a Steam account and an internet connection
Set up the game
- Play the current in-game tutorial or a bot match before queuing for a normal match. Choose a hero with a manageable ability set and read its abilities.
- This covers the ordinary Ancient objective, not custom modes. Hero abilities, map features and items change with patches.
If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)
Playing Dota 2
- Lanes spawn allied and enemy creeps. Earn gold by landing last hits, gain experience nearby, and buy items that suit your hero.
- Protect your own towers while using allied creeps to attack enemy towers. A tower push opens a route toward the base.
- Coordinate with teammates around objectives and opposing heroes. A kill creates an opportunity, but does not win the match by itself.
- Destroy the opposing Ancient to win, even if the other team has more hero kills.
A push after a defender falls
Your team wins a fight near the middle lane, and allied creeps are already at the enemy tower. Push with the wave and withdraw when opponents respawn. Chasing another hero into the jungle wastes the brief chance to damage the route to the Ancient.
A lane advantage must become a structure advantage
Last hits and hero eliminations create gold and time. Use those resources to escort a creep wave and take a tower when it is safe. A team can win fights but still lose if it never protects its own base or converts openings into progress toward the Ancient.
Beginner decisions
- Watch the minimap before moving far up a lane.
- Spend accumulated gold after a safe return rather than carrying an unused item advantage.
Common rule mix-ups
- Attacking an enemy structure without allied creeps to absorb its attention.
- Treating a hero-kill score as the win condition.
