How to play League of Legends
In Summoner's Rift, help a five-champion team destroy the enemy Nexus by clearing lanes and structures.
What you need
League of Legends on a supported PC with a Riot account and online connection
Set up the game
- Complete the tutorial and try a practice or bot game. Select Summoner's Rift, one champion and a lane role before queuing with other players.
- This covers the classic five-versus-five Rift, not ARAM or Arena. Patch changes can alter champions and items.
If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)
Playing League of Legends
- Minions move along three lanes. Last-hit enemy minions for gold and stay near them for experience, then buy items at your fountain with earned gold.
- Work with minions to damage opposing turrets. Clear a path through a lane's structures; the opposing Nexus is the final objective.
- Jungle monsters, Drakes and Baron Nashor offer team advantages, but chasing them should not leave your lanes and base undefended.
- Destroy the enemy Nexus to win. Champion kills provide gold and opportunities, but a high personal kill score does not itself finish the match.
A turret with no allied minions
You arrive under an enemy turret while your own minions are still behind you. Wait for them to reach it and absorb shots before attacking. Walking in alone makes the turret target you, wasting a chance to take the structure.
Why a lane push matters
A kill creates a temporary numbers advantage, but a minion wave at a turret can convert that advantage into damage to the structure. Protect the wave, take an objective when safe and retreat before the enemy team returns; that sequence advances toward the Nexus.
Beginner decisions
- Let allied minions take turret damage before approaching an enemy turret; walking ahead alone is dangerous.
- Spend unspent gold at a suitable return to base rather than staying on the map with a full purse and weak equipment.
Common rule mix-ups
- Confusing an inhibitor's destruction with the end of the game; the Nexus must fall.
- Ignoring the minimap while extending far down a lane where opponents can approach unseen.

Can I win by getting the most kills?
No. The enemy Nexus is the victory objective in Summoner's Rift.
