How to play Overcooked
Prepare, cook, plate and serve orders together against the kitchen timer to earn enough stars to progress.
What you need
The original Overcooked on a supported device; one to four players can share the kitchen
Set up the game
- Choose the original Overcooked campaign and complete its opening kitchen. Look at the order tickets and food-preparation stations before the timer starts.
- This guide is for the first game's campaign, not Overcooked! 2's throwing mechanic or All You Can Eat's assist settings.
If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)
Playing Overcooked
- Read the pending recipe tickets. Move an ingredient to the proper station, chop it when required, combine the right ingredients in a pot or pan and wait for cooking to finish.
- Move the finished food to a clean plate and deliver it at the service window before its ticket expires. A missed or wrong order costs an opportunity; dishes and stations need managing as levels progress.
- Work around moving or separated kitchen layouts and keep a path between ingredient, cooking, plating and service stations.
- At the end of the timed level, compare the earned score with the level's star thresholds. Reach the required stars to unlock later kitchens; there is no last-player-standing winner.
One chef chops, one watches the pot
A soup ticket shows three onions. Chef A chops onions and passes them to Chef B, who loads the pot and watches the cooking indicator. While the soup cooks, Chef A can start the next ticket. Chef B plates the finished soup and carries it to the window before its timer ends.
The ticket is the recipe
A vegetable soup ticket calls for the vegetables shown on that ticket, not whatever ingredients happen to be nearest the cutting board. Chop, cook and plate in the required order; if a pot is left unattended too long, it can burn. The layout changes the route, but the order ticket still tells you what to serve.
Beginner decisions
- Assign one chef to chopping and another to cooking or plating in a kitchen with a bottleneck; switch roles when the layout moves.
- Look at two upcoming tickets before cutting ingredients so a long cook can begin while the next order is prepped.
Common rule mix-ups
- Delivering cooked food without a plate or forgetting to wash returned dirty dishes in a level that uses them.
- Assuming the throw action from Overcooked! 2 exists in the original game.
Questions about this game
Can I play alone?
Yes. The original game supports one player controlling and switching between chefs, but the workflow is designed around cooperation.
Do the recipes stay the same?
No. Levels introduce new ingredients, stations and moving layouts; follow the ticket shown in that kitchen.
