What you need

Installed Overwatch client, online access and supported controls

Set up the game

  1. Complete the tutorial and test a hero in Practice Range; learn abilities, ultimate and communication.
  2. Choose standard 5v5 Role Queue, a role and a hero. Read the map objective.

If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)

Playing Overwatch 2

  1. Move toward the objective using cover. Tanks create space, damage heroes apply pressure and supports sustain and assist.
  2. Use abilities within their cooldowns and conditions; build and commit ultimates with a team purpose.
  3. Escort attackers move a payload through checkpoints; defenders delay. Hybrid begins with a capture before escort.
  4. Control requires capture and hold progress; Push requires controlling a robot to advance your barricade farther.
  5. Watch time, objective progress and overtime. Playlist format determines rounds and side changes. Defeated heroes normally respawn; elimination totals do not replace the objective.

The wrong reward after a good fight

Your team wins beside an Escort payload and one defender retreats around a corner. If everyone chases, the payload stops advancing. Keep appropriate objective contact while teammates hold useful forward cover. Compare the value of a chase with the ground and time the team could otherwise gain.

Read the fight before committing

Before crossing an exposed lane, check teammates, reachable cover and whether immediate objective contact is required. A tank without support may not hold gained space. A damage hero too far from effective range may apply little pressure. Choose a position that lets your abilities contribute and preserves an escape route. This is easier to repeat than relying on a spectacular isolated play. Match settings decide what counts as enough rounds or progress, so read the displayed objective rather than assuming every mode is team deathmatch.

Beginner decisions

  • Regroup after several teammates fall instead of entering alone repeatedly.
  • Check which ultimates allies have already spent before adding another to a won fight.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Chasing while the objective goes unattended.
  • Applying Role Queue composition to every playlist.

Questions about this game

Can heroes change?

Standard modes allow switching in spawn; mode restrictions and charge rules may apply.

Is support only healing?

No. Utility, damage and positioning also matter; tools depend on the hero.

Sources and edition notes

Standard 5v5 Role Queue objective matches: one tank, two damage, two support. Open Queue, 6v6, Stadium, Arcade and custom games differ.
