What you need

Modern WoW client on a supported computer, online access and required account access

Set up the game

  1. Choose modern WoW rather than Classic, create a character and read its class description.
  2. Follow Exile’s Reach when offered; learn movement, camera, target selection, action bars and inventory.

If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)

Playing World of Warcraft

  1. Accept a quest, read objectives and track the location.
  2. Target an enemy and use abilities within range, facing, cooldown and resource conditions.
  3. Loot eligible enemies and interact with required objects; a kill does not always complete a collection quest.
  4. Equip appropriate rewards and read newly unlocked skills; later choose specialization and talents for the role you want.
  5. Turn in completed quests and continue stories. Group activities require their own objectives and role responsibilities. Normal defeat allows resurrection rather than permanent elimination; Hardcore is different.

Read the final requirement

Enough enemies are defeated but the collection objective is incomplete. Check whether you needed to loot an item or interact with nearby objects. More blind kills may not help. Even after objectives are met, a turn-in can still be required to award experience and open the next story step.

Separate class from role

Some classes offer several roles through specializations. Before queueing as tank or healer, read what the selected specialization does and practice essential tools. Solo questing teaches movement and combat, but not automatically managing a group’s incoming damage. Begin with a modest activity where you can observe cast warnings and move out of hazards while keeping track of your action bar. Choose tasks by what you are ready to learn rather than treating the entire world as a race to a single ending.

Beginner decisions

  • Bind a small useful ability set where you can reach it while moving, then expand it as you learn.
  • Tell a dungeon group you are new; avoid pulling extra enemies while learning the route.

Common rule mix-ups

  • Applying Classic progression instructions to Retail.
  • Judging every item solely by its appearance.

Questions about this game

Is level cap the end?

No. Stories, equipment, collections and activities continue; caps vary by branch and expansion.

Must I raid immediately?

No. Tutorial and questing provide a solo beginning.
