How to play Halo Infinite
In Halo Infinite multiplayer, complete the selected mode's objective using shields, weapons, equipment and teamwork.
What you need
Halo Infinite multiplayer on a supported platform and online connection
Set up the game
- Open Academy to practice movement and weapons, then choose a named multiplayer playlist. Read whether the match is Slayer or an objective mode before spawning.
- Campaign is separate access and progression; this guide covers ordinary multiplayer modes, not the campaign or every custom-game rule.
If you play on PC for long stretches, a comfortable mouse or headset makes a real difference. Razer's accessory range is one place to compare options; check platform compatibility first. (Affiliate link: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. How links work.)
Playing Halo Infinite
- Move with teammates, collect weapons and equipment from the map, and use cover while shields recharge after damage stops.
- In Slayer, eliminate the opposing team toward the displayed target. In Capture the Flag, Oddball and other modes, follow the mode-specific carrier, capture or scoring objective instead of chasing kills alone.
- Respawn rules and equipment vary by playlist. Monitor the scoreboard and current objective until the mode's time or score condition decides the match.
The flag is moving home
Your teammate has the enemy flag and is crossing an exposed lane. Instead of hunting another opponent across the map, take a position covering the route to your base. The capture succeeds only when its conditions are met, not because your team won the previous skirmish.
Slayer and objective modes reward different decisions
A duel matters in Slayer because eliminations directly contribute to the team target. In Oddball, possession time is the objective; staying close enough to protect the carrier can be worth more than following a distant enemy. Check the selected playlist before adopting a strategy.
Beginner decisions
- A damaged shield needs a break from incoming fire; retreat behind cover rather than extending a losing duel.
- An objective carrier often needs escort and cleared routes more than teammates who run after unrelated eliminations.
Common rule mix-ups
- Assuming the team with more eliminations always wins a flag or ball mode.
- Expecting campaign checkpoints and equipment persistence in a multiplayer match.
Questions about this game
Is multiplayer the same purchase as campaign?
Halo Support describes Multiplayer and Academy as free-to-play components, with campaign access separate.
Which mode should a beginner pick?
Academy and a named playlist with a clear objective are easier to learn than a custom game with unknown settings.
